When I encountered the work of Swiss artist Christopher Füllemann it was love at first sight. Joyful, colourful, sensuous and cute, the material and shapes which outline the sculptural surfaces of Fülleman’s work trigger a sensual reaction. It was an immediate crush.

His work is the result of playful compositions translated into anthropomorphic shapes. I find myself attributing characteristic features to them as if they were living organic creatures. I take the personification to an even higher level as the sculptures become embodied memories or self portraits.

As a young child, Füllemann was already contemplating the state of the world which surrounded him. His journey was marked by a constant flow of questions. It became clear to him that there are things which are considered “useless” and “unnatural”. But what did that actually mean? And who determines, or even defines what is “useless” and what is “unnatural”?

Sculpture became his faithful guide and the only way to express his emotions.

His recent practice is incorporated into a greater body of research on the
pre-defined orientation of forms and materials in relation to queer phenomenology. Queer, more than just a term describing sexual identity, can be a navigation through the ever-growing and shifting elements of life. Queer phenomenology is an approach to reveal how social relations are arranged spatially, and how queerness disrupts and re-orders these relations by not following the already laid out and accepted path.

The work of Christopher Füllemann rebels against normative structures. It wants to wake you up from your docile sleep of everyday doings and everyday thinking. The work of Christopher Füllemann is an invitation to come and play in worlds of wonders and possibilities, if only you dare.

Christopher Füllemann is a Swiss artist born in 1983 in Lausanne. He graduated from Lausanne University of Art and Design/ECAL in 2008. In 2012, Füllemann obtained a Master in Fine Arts from the San Francisco Art Institute/SFAI and received the SFAI Outstanding Award in Sculpture. He was awarded with the Swiss Art Award 2011 and the Gustave Buchet Award in 2013, which included a solo show at the Musée cantonal des Beaux-Arts in Lausanne, Switzerland. Füllemann presented his work in Museum Langmatt in Baden in 2016, at the 2017 Long Night of Museums in Basel, and showed at Duve Gallery Berlin. He also collaborated with the artists Charlotte Herzig and Elise Lammer on travelling multi disciplinary exhibitions and performances, with Simone Aughterlony for Zürich Moves! 2017 performance lab, as well as Florence Peake and Eve Stainton on a performance at The Place, London in 2018. Recently, Christopher Füllemann presented a sculpture event at U-Jasdowski Center for Contemporary Arts in Warsaw in collaboration with the collective KEM. He is currently working between Zürich and London on new researches and collaborations with artists and performers.
